Connecting with Students in Class

I’ve been thinking about how to better connect with my students during lessons. I find it helps to incorporate their interests into the signs we practice. For instance, using popular songs can really engage them. Have others found creative ways to adapt their teaching to foster understanding?

I’ve found that relating signs to current events can grab students’ attention too. For example, if there’s a big sports event happening, you could incorporate players’ names and actions into your lessons. Do you think your students would connect with that as much as they do with songs?

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌

Incorporating their favorite shows or movies into your lessons can also work wonders — like teaching signs related to popular characters. It’s kind of like turning each class into a mini episode! Any specific shows you think resonate well with their interests?

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‌

It’s great to see so much enthusiasm! I think using local culture or events can really resonate with students, like incorporating signs related to a community festival. Just make sure not to go too niche; if they don’t know the event, you might lose them.
